Back in January 2016 I wrote a blog post ‘New Year Goals 2016’; it was about setting myself some goals for 2016. I didn’t want to set resolutions, just give myself some targets to aim towards. I’ll be doing the same in 2017.
I wanted to review them to see how successful or unsuccessful I’ve been. If I’m honest with myself, I don’t think I’ve made any significant changes, but I do feel a lot happier at the end of 2016 than I did at the start.

Set shortly before Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, this is the first of Lucasfilm’s standalone films in the Star Wars Universe. The film tells the story of how the Death Star plans came to be in possession of the rebellion. With Disney’s investment in Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise they are surely looking for a return by expanding on the saga.
Many Star Wars fans were not impressed with the previous attempts at prequels, so Gareth Edwards had a difficult task ahead of him from the off. This film takes places outside the saga, so gone is the Star Wars crawl, Jedi and John Williams score, although John Williams themes do make some appearances throughout.
Rogue One does a very good job of being a standalone film, yet treating the fans to some nostalgic glimpses of the saga. There are nods to the original saga, but not so much that they distract from the focus of the film. In fact, there are some big treats for fans with the help of CGI. I don’t want to say too much, but there was one fantastic scene towards the end of film with Darth Vader showing how he obtained his reputation. As a modern man, I support equality for all. Women are still discriminated against in some walks of life, but Dads are certainly treated less favourably when it comes to baby changing facilities. Unfortunately, either baby changing facilities are lacking or hidden away in the ladies. This is a common thing for new Dads to encounter and I have on occasion had to change my boys’ nappies on the floor of the toilets or in the car. Mums don’t appreciate it either, Dad goes to change the nappy and returns moments later, baby in hand and a look on his face saying ‘It’s not might fault they’re in the ladies.’ Many retailers or restaurants put one set of baby changing facilities in the disabled toilet, but this creates its own problems especially if it is a popular family attraction or if the disabled toilet is locked. Nobody wants to be hanging around waiting for a key when you’ve got the smell of an ‘up the back-er’. Earlier this year in the USA, Barrack Obama made it law that all public toilets had to have a baby changing facilities for men to use. This year’s Sudocrem Care & Protect Baby Changing Room Awards have launched and they are focussing on dads.
This year’s awards are looking to recognise those facilities in the UK that do support fatherhood and changing their baby’s nappy! Sudocrem have teamed up with The Dad Network for the category ‘Best Dad’s Toilet.’ You can vote for the best changing facility you have come across. If you enter you will be put into a prize draw to win a family trip to Knoll House, Dorset! You can vote here: https://sudocrem.co.uk/social-hub
The Christmas TV season will soon be upon us and this is my round up of the top TV picks for Kids this Christmas. Christmas TV in the past has given us some classics like ‘the Snowman’, ‘the Vicar of Dibley’ and ‘Morecambe and Wise’.
From my own childhood, I remember being amazed by the animation of Wallace and Gromit and in stitches at the comedy gold of Only Fools and Horses: Del Boy and Rodney running through the streets of Peckham as Batman and Robin. |
