As a Dad I am always on the lookout for the next big, kids’ TV programme. This is for 2 reasons, firstly because like most Dads I am still a big kid inside. Secondly because between 6:00am and 7:00pm I accept the fact that my little boys are in charge of what goes on TV, so it’s better if it’s something I might enjoy as well.
Thankfully a new show is starting on CBBC on Monday 25th July at 6:00pm which might be something we can all sit down and enjoy. The programme has already won this year’s Pulcinella Award for Best Kids TV Series. The story comes from the Bottersnikes & Gumbles books by Australian author S.A. Wakefield. The goodies are the Gumbles and the baddies are the Bottersnikes; they battle in a forgotten valley of abandoned junk.
The series follows 3 Gumbles: Tink, Bounce and Willi. They love to have fun around their junk valley, but have to avoid the Bottersnikes. The Bottersnikes are the stinkiest, ugliest, laziest and meanest spirited creatures. They eat mattress stuffing and rusty nails.
The programme focuses on the Gumbles as they try to outwit the Bottersnikes. It looks like it is aimed at an older audience than Cbeebies, which is currently L’s channel of choice, but without the fighting of something like the Avengers cartoon. You can check out a few sneak peek clips here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/shows/bottersnikes-and-gumbles Me and L are certainly excited to tune in and with trumping, shouting and pulling of nose hairs in the sneak peeks it looks like our kind of humour. We’ll give you a full review once we’ve seen the first episode.

This is a review of BakerDays, a website that provides personalised cakes for any occasion. I ordered an Anniversary Cake with a picture and personalised message for our 3rd Wedding Anniversary. There was a wide range to choose from and you can pick cakes for any occasion Birthdays, Congratulations, Engagements, Anniversaries and many more. The cakes can be ordered in a variety of sizes:
I ordered a 5” Letterbox Gift Cake on the evening of the 12th and it arrived on the 14th. I loved the idea of being able to choose a cake from a wide range of designs and then being able to personalise it by adding a special photograph and a unique message from my boys for their Mummy. When it arrived the Letterbox cake fit perfectly through our letter box and was a great surprise for my wife. It’s our anniversary on the 26th but the boys couldn’t wait to open it once it arrived. It came with balloons and candles, a nice little added extra. It was also safely delivered in a secure cake tin. Our eldest had the honour of presenting it to his Mummy and she was very excited to see what was inside. The design on the cake was great and matched my order exactly.
We couldn’t wait to get tucked in and it was delicious. The sponge was moist and the icing a good thickness. Both boys thought it was very tasty and my wife was very impressed. A great experience from BakerDays in the Bickham household. The idea of a home delivered cake is a novelty and a great gift idea for an anniversary or just to send to someone who may live a distance away. I love summer, kids love summer even Olaf loves summer and he’s a snowman. When I think back to summer holidays as a boy I remember all the fun days I had playing outside. Here’s a few ideas for free fun activities to keep your little ones busy this summer.
Story Walk This is easy and cheap, all you need is a book and a nice walk. The Forestry Commission have done a few themed walks around Julia Donaldson books, but you can invent your own. As you are walking you simply read the book and encourage your children to use their imagination to act out the story as they go along. ‘We’re Going On a Bear Hunt’, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room on the Broom’ all work well. Trying to find bows, wands and hats in the undergrowth will keep you all busy for a few hours.
Water Fight
I always remember when my brother got a Super Soaker 5000 for his birthday; I got a water fight whooping that year. It was always great fun though! Water fights are easy to set up and as long as you have them outside there shouldn’t be any mess. You can use plastic cups, old (cleaned) spray bottle or the water pipe to have a fun water fight. You could even go all out and set up bases and try to capture the flag.
Go to The Park
It’s simple, it’s easy and it’s free. Most parks have a variety of activities available these days but if you’re struggling you could feed the ducks, set the world skimming stones record or just play on the Adventure Playground. Most town parks have a water feature so if the weather’s nice make sure you take a swimming costume and a towel. Library Another free and easy choice. Each summer there is a Summer Reading Challenge. This year it’s ‘The Big Friendly Read’ celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl. The challenge is to read 6 books over the summer. If you go to your local library and sign up there’s lots of freebies and information. You can find out more here: http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Make A Den We made so many dens as boys, some with blankets in our bedroom, some with pallets and nails in the wood. If you’re feeling really adventurous you could build a den in your garden and try camping outside for the night. There you go, 5 free things to do this summer. I hope you enjoy and have a wonderful summer. |
