This weekend we were given the opportunity to be at the launch of a brand-new children's book - 'Wendy and the Biscuit Tree' by Lorna McCann. Lorna is a fellow mum of 2 boys and a local author based in Shropshire. This is her first book, which is illustrated by Holly Bushnell.
The book tells of Wendy the smallest giraffe in the woods and the story of how she discovers an enormous biscuit tree.
Lorna had been posting about the event on Facebook and it looked like it was going to be a lovely afternoon. Our eldest, L, was very excited about hearing a new story.
The launch was held at the ‘Button & Bear’ in Shrewsbury, a venue we'd never been to. It's a fabulous bookshop which has its own cafe and a woodland room in the basement, which was the perfect setting for the launch of the book. On arrival, the children had activities laid out ready for them, including colouring sheets and making Wendy giraffes out of paper. The woodland room itself was decked out with grass carpeting and log cushions. L got comfy with his friend and Lorna settled everyone in.
She began by giving us some background to the book: she wrote it after making a promise to her two young sons, who were obviously very proud of their mum!
The story itself is about friendship, discovering and most importantly (obviously) biscuits!
The audience of children were hooked for the entire reading and afterwards were rewarded with their own Wendy Giraffe biscuit, along with a special seed for their very own Christmas trees to grow at home (no biscuit tree seeds available)! L and his friend then ate several biscuits available on the refreshment table before sitting down to listen to the story again, this time read to them by us.
It was a lovely afternoon and we were so pleased to be there for the launch of a wonderful new children's book. L has now listened to the book 5 times and loves it. It's a great bedtime read, if you want to grab your own copy, then head over to amazon.
